FOODBANKS
Fellow Rotarians; as you know, foodbanks in our Rotary District 5240 service area are in even greater need of support (both financial and food products) due to the many families that find themselves out of work this year.  I am sure that our 72 clubs and 3,800 members have thought about that, and many of us have already taken action to help support our local foodbanks.  Many clubs actively support this endeavor each and every year.

As your Community Service Director for District 5240; I am proposing 2 drives to support the local foodbank of your choice (one ending December 31; and one ending April 30). To accomplish this, I am asking you to consider the following:

1.  Consider involving your spouse and family in some sort of effort to raise funds, gather non-perishable food items, or assist to raise awareness of the need in your area.  The attached link will take you to a special invitation to participate in this effort by Rotarian spouse Michelle Velarde (RC Santa Barbara Sunrise).

2.  For those clubs who already do foodbank support, please move it higher up on your priority list this year and conduct at least 2 drives; and for those clubs who have not done this type of support, please make this one of your new primary service projects for the year.

3.  From a Rotary perspective; I would really like to find out collectively what our level of support and participation is for this project, so I would ask that you consider providing me with the appropriate information after the December 31 timeline, and again after the April 30 timeline.

COATS FOR KIDS
Fellow Rotarians; because of the current economic situation in our community, the need for coats for our citizens is greater than ever before.  With the hard work and dedication of the members of the Rotary Clubs of Ventura, ten thousand citizens will be warm this winter. Making the world a better place to live, one coat at a time, is a goal worth achieving. Rotary Clubs are dedicated to improving the lives of others.  The Coats for Kids Project is not dependent upon funding for its implementation but rather is dependent on the efforts of its members who devote many hours to the project.
As your Community Service Director for District 5240; I wanted to make this model available to any club or group of clubs who have an interest in a project of this scope.  All of our communities within District 5240 have similar needs; so perhaps this one might be for you to implement in your own way in your specific area.  Also, if you have a coat or clothing drive already set up, please share it, and perhaps another club may use your model!

The Ventura Model is described with a bit more detail from the 'Community Service' site page found under the 'Service' tab at www.rotarydistrict5240.org.

Consider involving your spouse and family in some sort of effort to raise funds, gather useable coats, or assist to raise awareness of the need in your area.

For those clubs who already engage in this type of effort, please move it higher up on your priority list this year; and for those clubs who have not done this type of support, please make this one of your new primary service projects for the year.

From a Rotary perspective; I would really like to find out collectively what our level of support and participation is for this project, so I would ask that you consider providing me with the appropriate information soon after your project is completed but no later than April 30, 2011.
