Pollinators - bees, butterflies, and other essential species - need our help. Their work supports nearly one-third of the food we eat and plays a critical role in maintaining a healthy ecosystem. Unfortunately, pollinator populations have declined by as much as 40% due to climate change, urbanization, pesticide use, and other factors.Rotary Clubs throughout District 5240 have a unique opportunity to make a meaningful impact. Clubs in San Luis Obispo, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Kern Counties are located along vital pollinator pathways, making this an ideal environmental service project for every club to support.
In April, District Governor Mike Dutra endorsed the Rotary District 5240 Pollinator Pathways Gardens Program. Shortly thereafter, the Monarch Joint Venture designated District 5240 as an official partner and opened its Monarchs and More Western Habitat Program to our Rotary Clubs. Through this program, clubs can receive free seeds, plants, and technical support to establish pollinator gardens.
These gardens also create valuable opportunities for collaboration with local botanical gardens, University of California Master Gardener Program volunteers, and the California Native Plant Society. In addition, partnerships with schools, parks, and public agencies can help identify ideal planting sites. The program offers engaging educational opportunities for Interact and Rotaract members as well.
