For over a decade, the Rotary Club Floating Classroom on Lake Casitas has been    transforming the lake into a living laboratory—bringing science, conservation, and community spirit together aboard a boat with a mission.

This innovative program, developed in partnership with local schools, environmental educators, and the Rotary Club of Ojai West, provides hands-on learning experiences for elementary and middle school students. Throughout the year, students board the specially outfitted pontoon boat at Lake Casitas to explore topics like ecology, water conservation, and local wildlife—all from the deck of the lake itself.

More Than Just a Field Trip

The Floating Classroom is designed to spark curiosity and connect students to the natural environment in a personal, meaningful way. Docents identify native and invasive species, and understand the role of Lake Casitas in the broader watershed.

Local educators and Rotary volunteers guide the experience, reinforcing classroom concepts with real-world relevance. “This program not only complements our science curriculum but gives students a sense of stewardship over the environment,” said one local teacher. “They come away feeling empowered and engaged.”

Other Cruises

The Floating Classrooms project also provides cruises for local seniors and environmentally concerned people.  Recently a group led by Chumash elder Julie Tumamait-Stensile learned about the history of the ancient valley which became the Casitas Reservoir.

A Community Effort

The success of the Floating Classroom is thanks in large part to the dedication of Rotary volunteers and community partners, including the Casitas Municipal Water District, local school districts, and environmental nonprofits. Rotary members help with funding, program coordination, crew and even serve as onboard docents and guides. Retired sea Captain Ed Kutchma narrates most of the school cruises.

Each year, about 500 students from the Ojai School District benefit from the program, many of whom are experiencing the lake—or a boat ride—for the first time. The program is primarily funded by the Ojai Wine Festival on the third Saturday in June, and support from local organizations and donors. OjaiWineFestival.com
