On Tuesday, March 10, the Pismo Beach Five Cities Rotary club enjoyed an inside look at the cutting edge of aerospace technology right here in San Luis Obispo. We were hosted by Inspired Flight, a premier manufacturer of commercial drones that got its start as a success story from the Cal Poly Center for Innovation & Entrepreneurship (the "Hothouse").

About Inspired Flight

Founded by three Cal Poly graduates, Inspired Flight has quickly become a leader in the American drone industry. Their mission focuses on creating reliable, secure, and highly capable platforms for professional use. Unlike many consumer drones, these are "Blue UAS" cleared, meaning they meet high-level government security standards.

The company is a true local powerhouse: they engineer the hardware, build the sub-assemblies and batteries, and program the flight software all within their San Luis Obispo plant. Their technology serves critical roles in:

  • Infrastructure: Inspecting utility lines and bridges.
  • Agriculture: High-precision crop mapping and monitoring.
  • Construction: Site surveying and 3D modeling.

The Presentation & Tech

We were honored to hear from General Manager Nadia Adam and Vice President of Technology Nick Winzcik, who provided a deep dive into the company’s growth and technical prowess. They primarily focus on two heavy-duty models:
  • A versatile mid-range unit with a 3–6 lb payload.
  • A heavy-lift workhorse capable of carrying 19 lbs.
  • Performance: These drones boast an impressive 5-mile range and can stay airborne for approximately 50 minutes.

Field Demo & Hands-On Flight

The highlight of the day took us to a nearby testing ground with Marketing Manager Andrew. He demonstrated the seamless process of unpacking and prepping these sophisticated machines for flight.
The experience became interactive when Andrew invited several of our members to take the controls! To wrap up the demonstration, he took a unique group photo of the club from a bird’s-eye view.

A Fine Finish

We capped off the afternoon with a fantastic lunch at Todo Bueno in the San Luis Obispo Public Market.
A huge thank you to Greg Holsen for coordinating this fascinating site visit and arranging our lunch. It was an inspiring day seeing how local talent is shaping the future of global technology.
