The Rotary Club of China Lake is proud to announce its efforts to establish a new Satellite Club as part of a district-wide initiative encouraged by District Governor Mike Dutra. This effort responds to a critical need to engage a younger generation of professionals and ensure the long-term vitality of Rotary in the Ridgecrest area.

Founded in June 1951, the China Lake Club has a rich legacy of service and leadership. In its earlier days, the club even helped form the Inyokern Rotary Club to provide additional opportunities for members to make up missed meetings—a necessity at the time, as the closest Rotary club is over 90 minutes away.

We face a new challenge: an aging membership base, with an average age of around 65. Recognizing the need for future leaders in their 20s and 30s, the club determined that creating a traditional new Rotary club in a city of approximately 45,000 residents (already served by two clubs) might not meet community needs. Instead, the Satellite Club model offered a promising solution.

A dedicated committee of Rotarians has taken on the project, carefully researching Rotary International’s guidelines, consulting with district and zone leaders, and receiving valuable guidance from Angela Lopez of Rotary International. The team is working through critical decisions on bylaws, dues, governance, fundraising, and membership integration.

Satellite Clubs operate under the guidance of their sponsor club but maintain flexibility in:
• Meeting format and frequency
• Project focus
• Leadership structure, including a Chair, Vice Chair, and Secretary
• Membership development and engagement strategies

To launch the club, the China Lake team organized a "Meet and Greet" event, securing a local venue exclusively for the evening. Outreach efforts have included personal invitations, social media campaigns, and in-person visits to potential members. Organizations such as the local hospital, college, school district, Chamber of Commerce, and businesses have been instrumental in helping identify emerging community leaders. This new Satellite Club represents not just a growth strategy, but a commitment to evolving with the times and continuing Rotary's mission of "Service Above Self" for generations to come.

The China Lake Rotary Club is excited and optimistic about this new chapter. We are confident that the Satellite Club will enrich both our existing membership and the wider Ridgecrest community.
