District Governor's Message
September is Basic Education and Literacy month in the Rotary world. As I travel around our District, I am so proud to see every club in our District giving students in our communities a “leg up” to foster educational success. Our clubs provide students with backpacks, dictionaries, iPads, school supplies, and school clothes. Many of our clubs host an appreciation breakfast for the teachers and school staff on the first day of school. Rotarians raise money all over our District to provide sizeable scholarships to further the education of deserving students.
Some clubs offer financial literacy programs to provide students with a basic understanding of financial transactions, such as managing a checking account and developing a budget, to foster their ability to live independently. Rotarians give their time and attention to mentor individual students through reading programs.
Legacy programs through Rotary such as RYLA and PRLS give students leadership
tools that encourage and enable them to “reach for the stars” as they focus on
their future. Understanding that good nutrition is crucial for learning, some Rotary Clubs have programs that provide food to students, including meals children can take home to enjoy with their families outside of school. Rotarians understand that basic education and literacy is crucial to student success all over the world. Without the efforts of Rotarians, far too many children would lack basic necessities to foster successful education. Many of our District and Global grants include the provision of education and supplies to underserved areas.
This is what Rotarians do. And the world is better for it.

The Rotary Club of Thousand Oaks does something special for local inmates at Todd Road Jail that have children at home. For the last 5 years, members of the Thousand Oaks club select children books and take them to the facility. Once there, specially selected inmates are then allowed to record the story with their voice on CD and send it back home to their children. The role of the Rotarian is help guide them along with their book, should they need it, and remind them of the mentor in which they should be for their child.
Rotary District 5240 encourages clubs within the District to submit short articles, "Club Stories," to be published on the District Website and in the District Newsletter. Take advantage of this FREE opportunity to showcase your club's accomplishments. Guidelines can be found on the district website.
